Explore AI and Neuroscience with Google’s New ‘Polar Peaks’ Quest

Google Research, in collaboration with the Stanford Accelerator for Learning, has unveiled its latest interactive educational experience, “Polar Peaks.” This quest is specifically designed to engage students aged 11 to 14 in the fascinating world of neuroscience while equipping them with essential AI literacy skills.

Understanding the Quest

“Polar Peaks” marks the third installment in the AI Quests series, which invites young learners to step into the roles of Google researchers tackling significant global challenges. This quest focuses on mapping the human brain using artificial intelligence, allowing students to gain insights into how AI can be responsibly applied in scientific research.

Learning Through Exploration

Throughout the quest, participants will engage in various activities that mirror real scientific processes. They will learn about important tasks such as data cleaning and model testing while understanding the critical role of human oversight in technology. The quest emphasizes that while AI can accelerate research, it requires careful management and ethical considerations.

Interactive Gameplay

As students navigate through “Polar Peaks,” they will be guided by in-game mentors who assist them in scanning and mapping neurons in the brain. This hands-on approach helps students comprehend the complexities of memory loss in the game character, making the learning experience both immersive and educational.

Real-World Impact

Inspired by over a decade of research in connectomics—the study of neural networks in the brain—”Polar Peaks” demonstrates how AI can facilitate groundbreaking scientific discoveries. Upon completing the quest, students will have the opportunity to hear from actual researchers who have contributed to significant advancements, such as the comprehensive mapping of the fruit fly brain, which holds the record for the largest brain map based on neuron count.

Empowering Educators

Teachers play a vital role in integrating these quests into their existing curriculum. To support educators, Google is launching new training modules within the Google AI Educator Series. These resources are designed to reinforce key AI literacy concepts and provide teachers with the tools needed to facilitate discussions around AI and its applications in the classroom.

The training modules for the first two quests are already available, with the module for “Polar Peaks” set to be released next month. This initiative aims to ensure that educators are well-equipped to guide their students through the complexities of AI and neuroscience.

Recognition and Future Plans

Earlier this year, the AI Quests series received accolades, including a 2026 Webby Award for AI Education, Learning & Training, as well as the Best Global K–12 Learning Solution at the ETIH Innovation Awards. Google is committed to collaborating with educators and partners to expand access to these quests, making them available to more classrooms throughout the school year.

With over 400,000 quests completed across ten languages to date, “Polar Peaks” stands as a testament to the growing importance of AI literacy in education and its potential to inspire the next generation of innovators.
